Unstash is a P2P platform for collaborative consumption aimed at fostering the sharing experience by making sharing fun, easy and social. The organization is based in Toronto.

According to their founders: “Every social circle has a huge overlap in consumer goods that don’t all need to be purchased, owned, and maintained by every individual. 62% of people state that they are interested in sharing consumer goods; they just haven’t had effective tools to do so, until now”.

The platform enables a community of users willing to share their goods.

A website for collaborative solutions in sustainability, poverty reduction and international development. A major focus and lens through which these challenges are viewed is that of Appropriate Technology. In particular, the Appropedia philosophy is one of Open Source Appropriate Technology (OSAT), and the site plays an important part in the nascent OSAT movement.

Appropedia is built upon the remarkable success of wiki-based infrastructures. Whereas existing wikis have focused on the power of collaborative web-based information centralization and developing collaboration policies to make that information solid, referenced and reliable for capturing what is well-established, Appropedia is expanding this concept to include collaborative research, development and problem-solving by incorporating real-world experiences of both amateurs and experts backed by policies that enable critiques, commentary and scoring of solutions.

Appropedia runs on the software MediaWiki. Currently, it houses more than 14,000 articles in 8 different languages. It was founded in California in 2007 but has quickly become a global community for sharing and co-creating knowledge on sustainability.

Connected Care recruits and trains local people to work as Community Researchers. They have access to the marginalized groups most in need of help, those with complex needs, and those who don’t access or engage with services. The Community Researchers live in the area they research. They often have links with, or need for, the local health and social care services. This gives them unique access to the people most often missed by social services. Working for Connected Care often gives them a new direction and confidence in starting something new. In return, the Community Researchers give their time, energy, passion and, importantly, access to the hardest to reach members of the community.

Connected Care also works with frontline staff and commissioners who are committed to redesigning services based on the needs of communities.

Samasource is a nonprofit organization that brings dignified, computer-based work opportunities to people living in poverty around the world. The organization’s mission is based on the belief that poverty can be alleviated by tapping into the brainpower of the poor and empowering them as producers of goods and services in the global economy.

Samasource derives its name from the Sanskrit word sama, which means equal, and was founded in 2008. The company’s board and management team includes experts in the fields of distributed work, economic development, and outsourcing.

The organization secures contracts from enterprise customers to provide data entry, digitization, content moderation, and other outsourcing services. The work is divided into smaller tasks called “microwork” which are completed by Samasource’s distributed workforce. This workforce comes from Service Partners in 6 different countries including Haiti, India, Kenya, Pakistan, South Africa, and Uganda.

UNUM is a Collective for Creators, where your fashion ideas are voted on, made by us, and sold as yours. Your signature goes on each piece, you receive a percentage of profits, and your voice gets heard in the industry. The best part is that you can use that voice for good. UNUM makes their pieces from leftover and rescued fabrics – giving everyone a more creative and fulfilling way to go about ‘fashionable responsibility’.

BrightFarms operates hydroponic rooftop greenhouses at grocery retailers, eliminating time, distance and cost from the food supply chain. They design, finance, build and manage the operations of the BrightFarm to deliver produce at equal or higher service levels than the retailer currently requires of its other suppliers. There is no cost to the retailer to build the BrightFarm, only an obligation to purchase the output.

By selling food immediately upon harvesting, with no storage or shipping, the retailer provides its customers with produce that is visibly fresher and more attractive, and that will last meaningfully longer and be more nutritious. A BrightFarm greenhouse grows food with a fraction of the land and water, using integrated pest management; our methods produce no agricultural runoff and have a dramatically reduced carbon footprint.
